In recent years psychology has begun to examine the attitudes and approaches of people who successfully change on their own. There are multiple ways to successfully change bad habits, but you would be smart to keep in mind these principles;
1. You cannot change all of your bad habits at once. Choose one habit to focus on to be successful. You will naturally start improving other habits once you get a handle on your own “worst” problem.
2. Find support. Find a coach, mentor, partner, internet forum or even a book that tells the story of someone who has overcome the problem you are dealing with. You’ll greatly increase your ease and success.
3. Make a plan. Use the resources to plot a course through the early murky waters of changing a habit.
4. Be Optimistic. As you struggle with the habit, use a picture of yourself healthy and whole to help you overcome cravings, setbacks and challenges. If you don’t like what you see in the mirror, think about how this process will change that.
5. Be excited. This is going to be fun! This isn’t about having something happen to you, it is within your own power to create a healthy life. Health will give you greater happiness, resiliency, energy to deal with problems and a sense of your own strength.
